Primeval forces draw giants here on an annual migration from frozen northern seas. Other creatures also travel thousands of miles to nest here on tiny dots in the ocean. The sea of Cortez has been relentlessly exploited by man, driving some species to the brink of extinction. 19:05 | Desperate Hours (Desperate Hours), Kataklizmų, Apie gamtą, Australija, Čekija, 2015 Earthquakes have always been with us, but it is really only in the last 50 years or so, that their devastating impact has been captured so vividly - not only in photographs but in moving images, broadcast around the world at first via television, and in the last 20 years or so over the internet. Some of the images that have been captured on film or tape go beyond human capacity to describe. So the earth really moves in this episode, as we take in scenes and stories from some of the most devastating of all natural cataclysms. The earthquake, in all its destructive power! Of all the natural disasters we look at in this episode, none releases more sheer destructive energy than an earthquake. After all, it takes a great deal of the Earth's energy, for two of its magnetic plates to grind against each long enough, that they go snap - and jolt the planet's outer crust for hundreds of square miles! Most earthquakes take place within the so-called 'Ring of Fire' around the Pacific Ocean. At least once a year Alaska experiences a 7.0 earthquake. California alone gets about 10,000 quakes a year, but most go unnoticed except by seismographs. |
19:35 | Desperate Hours (Desperate Hours), Kataklizmų, Apie gamtą, Australija, Čekija, 2015 Volcanoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, and fires. Cataclysmic events that are capable of wiping out thousands of lives in a terribly short space of time. Then there are epidemics and pandemics, particularly chilling in their own way, because they literally and figuratively get under the skin. Let's not forget man-made disasters, the industrial accidents and environmental disasters that highlight all that is worst about our presence on this fragile blue green planet. And what is more frightening than a nuclear calamity? Accidents on the road, on rail, in the air and at sea, well, may not have quite the same deadly power as volcanoes or earthquakes; but they hold their own terrors, and are responsible for 1000s of fatalities every year. In this sobering yet thrilling final instalment of Desperate Hours we will take a look at some of the worst of the worst. |

The epidemic and its global big brother the pandemic. Earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, volcanoes and all the cataclysms that threaten human life: all of them are terrifying in their own way. But perhaps nothing is more chilling the threat of disease. In recent times, the threat of not merely an epidemic, but a pandemic which could annihilate mankind has somehow never seemed more real. But before we hit the Panic Button, let's brace ourselves by calmly and coolly examining the facts. That means squaring up to the realities of Ebola and Cholera in Africa, SARS and Bird Flu, principally in Asia, but with potential to go global in a flash. There is Smallpox we seem to have defeated, but that's what was thought about Cholera just a few years back - and Cholera has had a resurgence recently. If we are as a species are to endure, we have to be ever vigilant as individuals – don't forget to wash your hands before you handle food for example. But we must also be able to act collectively, when the germ warfare is literal – because epidemics don't recognize territorial borders. |

04:00 | Close Quarter Battle (Close Quarter Battle), Veiksmo, Istorinis, Karinis, JAV, Čekija, 2012 In 1968, a new form of military policing was being developed in a rural area north of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department sent an observer to this unit, and he, in turn, took this knowledge back to the LAPD. This contributed to the development of the department's fi rst Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team. This CQB episode takes an historical journey to examine how this incident aff ected and changed police tactics around the world. Using CQB's trademark "sub-second" analysis, the program also looks at how police S.W.A.T. teams train, plan and equip themselves for the challenges of urban combat. The dramatization of a 1980s S.W.A.T. siege of a gang safe-house demonstrates the complicated challenge of protecting innocent people who might be caught in the line of fi re, as well as the specifi cs of the squad's training regimen, how they communicated, and the special equipment they used. |

12:25 | Quirky Science (Quirky Science), Visai šeimai, Singapūras, 2015 A man with an ear for music, one of the first to try teaching the deaf how to speak, thought he could build a "harmonic telegraph". He had this idea that several notes could travel through a wire simultaneously, instead of the one Morse code that the telegraph could transmit. He thought this to be possible because he misinterpreted the writings of a researcher writing in German - a language he did not know. - And would later describe his misinterpretation as a "very valuable blunder". The man was Alexander Graham Bell and he invented telephony. The big question is: what happens in that wire? How can voices travel? Bell and his assistant eventually proved that different tones would vary the strength of an electric current in a wire. In fact, it's the vibrations of the voice that determine the strength of the current. His invention caused a lot of fuss - yet it took years before people comprehended the scale of it: before the widespread use of the phone - whom were you going to call? Eventually, the telephone, or better said, its wiring, leads to the Internet. Nowadays we mostly make our calls "wireless" so the wire Graham Bell used to make voices travel over long distances is no longer needed How does that work? Even wireless calling, some say, is actually a very unnatural way of communicating. Looking at the future, are we heading towards a "phoneless" call? |

18:35 | A Year in the Wild (A Year in the Wild), Apie gamtą, Pietų Afrika, 2013 It is April, and large groups of blacktip and tiger sharks are gathering off the South African Coast. They are waiting for the onset of one of nature's most spectacular mass migrations: the annual sardine run. Like the cold ocean current that gives rise to the extraordinary numbers of African pilchards and their predators during the Sardine Run, the frigid Benguela current that runs northwards along the arid coastline of Namibia also supports a remarkable diversity of life. Monk parakeets are highly sociable, quirky South American parrots, but unlike all other parrots, they build complex nesting structures that can reach the size of a car, with individual compartments for each nesting pair. South American parakeets aren't the only birds turned architects: the social weaver birds of southern Africa also construct permanent nests on trees, large enough to house dozens of bird families, often stretching across several generations at a time. Like the weaverbirds, bats, too, tend to roost in large numbers. At this time of year, mothers and their young form part of the colony, with the young clinging closely to the front of their mothers until there are weaned at 6 months of age. In the Thong Pha Phoom National Park in Thailand, a pair of greater coucals have built a nest and laid a clutch of 4 eggs. By now, massive shoals of around 10 million Southern African Pilchards have gathered in the coastal waters of South Africa and begun their migration northwards. Like the dolphins during the Sardine Run, lions tend to work in teams when hunting large prey like buffalo. And right now, the need for the Xakanaxa pride to hunt and provide for their expanding family is greater than ever: they have new cubs to feed. A group of meerkats in South Africa is also busily caring for their growing family. Most of the clan has already left the family burrow to forage for insects and other small prey. In the Okavango Delta's grassland, a pair of puff adders is engaged in a lengthy mating ritual. |
19:20 | A Year in the Wild (A Year in the Wild), Apie gamtą, Pietų Afrika, 2013 The middle of the year sees the Okavango Delta's channels flooded and waterholes filled to the brim, even though the rains already stopped around April. At 15.000km2 the Okavango Delta is the world's largest inland delta with massive expanses of wetlands, but it can't compete with the size of Brazil's Pantanal region. This is a wetland that sprawls over an area of at least 140.000km2, with 80% of its floodplains submerged during the rainy season. Coral reefs, too, support an extraordinarily colourful diversity of life, despite their home in nutrient-poor tropical waters. All too often, the inhabitants of neighbouring homes pick fights with each other over territory, food or mating rights. Coastal marsh crabs in the Seychelles are no exception, busily collecting white flowers and defending their prizes against the attentions of other crabs. Day-to-day survival is always hard work in the natural world, and clashes with neighbours are common. At this time of year, the buffalo herds of the Okavango Delta are in prime condition, following the months of plenty after the rainy season. For the Xakanaxa lion pride, they are the preferred prey item, and they are often found hard on the heels of the buffalo. Just as the individual lions in a single pride join forces to ensure the survival of the pride's members, leafcutter ants also work together for the greater good of their colony. Their colonies are huge, numbering 3 to 8 million ants in a single nest, which can measure 15 metres across and 5 metres deep. Such large colonies require a lot of food, and supplying their precious fungus with enough plant material to grow means that within the tropical forests of South America, leaf cutter ants collectively consume almost 20% of the annual vegetation growth, making them the dominant herbivore around. For ragged-tooth sharks, it is time to congregate at the Aliwal Shoal off South Africa's coastline. Up to 50 ragged-tooth sharks can be seen bunched together in underwater caves and under ledges, showing tell-tale signs of scars and aggressive altercations that indicate their mating season has started. |

18:45 | Desperate Hours (Desperate Hours), Kataklizmų, Apie gamtą, Australija, Čekija, 2016 In this episode, you can run for cover but you can't hide from the wild winds. That means hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, twisters and typhoons. They're all pretty much different names for the same thing, no? Powerful wind storms. Well no, not necessarily. Hurricanes mostly form over warm ocean water and once they have gathered momentum, can be up to 600 miles across. A tornado on the other hand, is a rapidly spinning tube of air which touches both the ground and the clouds above. In the US, they are often referred to as twisters. Did you know that hurricanes twist and turn in anticlockwise fashion in the Northern Hemisphere but in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere? Or that tornadoes can travel at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour? They can demolish large buildings, uproot trees and pick up and hurl vehicles hundreds of feet away, as if they were mere playthings. A tornado's path of destruction can be anywhere in excess of a one mile wide, and some 50 miles long. 1000 tornadoes are reported in the United States in a typical year. Fortunately, only two percent of these are labeled "violent", but that's enough to create plenty of havoc annually. |

20:45 | Boteti: The Returning River (Boteti - The Returning River), Apie gamtą, Didžioji Britanija, Pietų Afrika, 2011 For 20 years the Boteti River in northern Botswana has not flowed. What was once an expansive and prolific body of water gradually dried up, leaving zebras, hippos, elephants and crocodiles dependant on the few pools formed from the occasional rains. But now, for the first time in 30 years, rain has fallen in sufficient quantities hundreds of miles to the north in the Angolan highlands, sending a stream of water through the river bed. After years of extreme drought, the river has finally returned in all its glory, transforming the landscape. Filmed in stunning HD, "Boteti - The Returning River" documents this extraordinary transformation and the dramatic changes it brings to the resident animals.During the years of drought, we see how desperate battles for survival play out along the dormant river, watched over by the elephants of the area. One of the few species that adapts well to the situation by carefully conserving what little water is available, the elephant is an expert at digging channels in the mud so water collects in sufficient quantities to drink.Vultures lurk ominously on the dusty banks adjacent to the pools, waiting patiently for dehydration to claim another victim. Crocodiles use caves to escape the heat of the sun and only emerge reluctantly to hunt when huge flocks of quelea birds arrive at the water. The crocs, along with numerous other species, are bound to this area because there is simply nowhere else to go. Beyond the dry river bed, semi-desert extends for hundreds of miles in all directions. With the arrival of the life-giving waters, there is a burst of activity. Fish and dragonflies soon emerge with their attendant predators and frogs appear in their thousands, attracting huge numbers of birds. The deluge also brings instant relief to the hippos by flushing out their fetid pools, while elephants celebrate by swimming and hosing each other down. Jackals and packs of wild dogs appear from nowhere to harass the drinking herds. But the most significant change occurs when the water reaches the parched wasteland of the Makgadigadi Salt Pans. Here, the coming of the flood sees flocks of pelican, flamingo and red-billed teal arrive to set up new breeding colonies.Filmed over a period of two years, this film provides a lasting and unique record of the transformation of an entire environment and contains many examples of previously unrecorded behaviour. |

18:45 | Desperate Hours (Desperate Hours), Kataklizmų, Apie gamtą, Australija, Čekija, 2016 In this instalment, we batten down the hatches, and run for dry land, as we look at the damage a little water can do, or rather, a great deal of it. The European Union's 'Floods Directive' defines a flood as "a covering by water of land not normally covered by water". But that rather tepid description simply doesn't do justice to the terror unleashed by raging currents and flash flooding. Natural disasters will be with us for a long time to come. But the death and destruction caused by Brazilian floods and landslides, the flooding after Hurricane Katrina and the Northern Indian Floods, could all have been reduced by environmental awareness in building codes, better coordinated relief efforts and so on. Then there was the massive flooding after the Tsunami of December 26th, 2004. Hundreds of thousands were killed in minutes, and millions lost their homes, as wave after destructive wave crashed into the coastlines of some 11 Indian Ocean countries. Environmentalists argue another factor causing floods is urbanisation. By replacing grass and dirt with buildings, roads and parking lots, insufficient soil is left, to soak up rainwater. When it does overflow, the results can be disastrous. |
19:15 | Close Quarter Battle (Close Quarter Battle), Veiksmo, Istorinis, Karinis, JAV, Čekija, 2012 The history of the British Empire colonial legacy in Northern Ireland is well known the world over but a there is a largely untold story of the the firefights between and close quarter battles exchanged between the provisional IRA, the British army and the elite SAS. Although the IRA often employed "terrorist" techniques within the city of london and on England's mainland not much is said of the often guerilla warfare techniques of the British Special Air Service in Northern Ireland since the beginning of this conflict. In this episode we will examine how the history of the Special Air Service affected the training of every elite force after it and how the close quarter battles in Northern Ireland in the late 1970s through to the millennium shaped both special forces and resistance methods. |
19:45 | Deep Blue Dive (Deep Blue Dive), Apie gamtą, Pietų Afrika, 2011 This film follows four Oxford University students as they embark on an epic, unsupported journey across the island of Svalbard, a deserted and barren icy wilderness in the north of Scandinavia. Their goal is to successfully retrace an expedition carried out nearly a century earlier. In 1923, four Oxford university predecessors had completed the arduous crossing. The team included the legendary Sandy Irvine, who famously partnered George Mallory a year later in a doomed attempt to become the first to climb Mount Everest. To this day, it remains a mystery whether they actually made it to the summit. Hundreds of hours of intense training and meticulous preparation are needed for such an expedition. They must learn how to deal with the dangers of polar bears and survive the freezing temperatures and the threat of prolonged storms. A key objective is to use a drone to document their arduous crossing of the ice and to carry out valuable scientific research into how global warming is affecting the glaciers of Svalbard, previously known as Spitsbergen (which means jagged mountains). Their expedition starts ominously as their boat journey to the first location at Duym Point faces heaving, mountainous seas which threaten the entire trip. Once ashore, each member has to pull 80 kilogramme sledges across the ice, carrying all of their supplies, climbing equipment, cameras, solar panels and tents. Spectacular drone footage reveals Svalbard's dramatic icy landscape as never before. The drone is also used to map one of the larger glaciers to see exactly how much it has shrunk due to global warming. They are able to compare this glacier to a photograph taken on the 1923 expedition. The results are startling. Along the way, the team come across historical traces of the 1923 expedition, including wooden tent pegs and rusted tins which once contained Oxo stock cubes donated by a sponsor. At times, the Arctic weather proves their greatest enemy. For days on end, they endure violent winds of over 100 kilometres per hour which force the team to build a survival shelter in which they huddle together for warmth. In all, it takes 32 days of guts and determination to cross the archipelago, but the trip is a resounding success. One team member, Jamie Gardiner, tragically died the following year while on a climb in Norway. This film is dedicated to his memory. |
20:35 | The Mystery Of the Disappearing Bees (Le mystère de la disparition des abeilles), Apie gamtą, Kanada, Prancūzija, 2010 An investigation into a worldwide ecological disaster that could endanger the whole of humanity. The future of our food resources depends on one small insect - the western honey bee, or Apis mellifera. Indeed, it is the most important agricultural pollinator on our planet given that one third of our food supply depends directly on pollination from bees. This documentary tells the story of a worldwide ecological disaster that has been waiting to happen for several generations. It was filmed over an 18-month period in France, Germany, the U.S., Canada and Scotland and retraces the various leads carried out by research scientists in order to try and understand and to stop the declining numbers of domestic and wild bees. Scientists are not the only professionals to figure at the centre of this drama. Beekeepers are in the front line, and striking contrasts exist among beekeepers' experiences in different countries, in various economic situations. The documentary seeks to understand how the long-enjoyed harmonious relationship between man and bee has now undergone such a radical change. It seeks to find a solution that goes beyond science. A solution that cannot be found without thoroughly re-examining our agricultural practice and our model of society. Can we rise to the challenge?
