Neither simply dance or traditional theatre, but an exciting and exhilarating new form that transcends either genre. Revisor is performed by 10 incredible dancers of Pite's company Kidd Pivot, to a soundtrack recorded by 9 voice actors. The dancers lip sync to the actors' words in Pite's trademark fluid, expressive and witty style. Revisor is based on a Russian anecdote about mistaken identity that surfaced in 1833, and quickly spread. It is now widely accepted as probably true. In 1836, the story took shape in a five-act play: The Government Inspector (Revisor) by Nikolai Gogol. The play premiered in St. Petersburg before the Czar who, according to reports, laughed and applauded, and is said to have remarked "Everybody gets it, and I most of all!" The play was in disguise as a comedy. Ten dancers embody the recorded dialogue of some of Canada's finest actors, exploring conflict, comedy and corruption in the potent relationship between language and the body. Revisor reunites the creators of the international stage hit Betroffenheit (winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production 2017) with director Jeff Tudor, who won the Rose d'Or (Arts) and Golden Prague Awards 2018 for his capture of Betroffenheit for the BBC. Segovia at Los Olivos Directed by Christopher Nupen In fact, in Western classical music, the achievement of Andrés Segovia is unique. As a boy in Granada, he was captivated by the variety of tone colours and the wealth of harmonic possibilities of the Spanish guitar and he saw a future for it that nobody had previously even dreamed of. On those seemingly slender beginnings he set out on a remarkable quest. Using the work done by Fernando Sor and Francisco Tarrega in the nineteenth century and adding the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, he began to build not only a career for himself, but to lay the foundations of modern guitar technique and the present-day international popularity of the Spanish guitar as a serious musical instrument. Within twenty years, Andrés Segovia had taught himself the instrument, revolutionised the technique and won acceptance for it on the concert platforms of Europe. He spent the next fifty years giving concerts in almost every part of the world and was at various times a resident of the United States, Switzerland and Argentina. At the age of 75, he returned to his native Andalusia with his young wife, Emilita, and built a new home, Los Olivos, on the Costa del Sol as close as he could to Granada. This film is made in the relaxed atmosphere of his new home and in Jaen and Granada where he spent his formative years. The idea is very simple: to give a great man an opportunity of looking back on sixty years of concert life and one of the most unusual contributions to Western music made by any performing musician in the last hundred years. Segovia talks in his inimitable poetic way about what he has tried to do, and plays some of the music most closely associated with him and his extraordinary career.

Rivalry in Music - Furtwängler vs. Toscanini Two men without whom the profession of conductor would not be what it is today. Two men who couldn't be more different from each other: Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler. The former was rigorously faithful to the musical score, the latter conducted with radical subjectivity. In 1931 they both conducted at the Bayreuth Festival - for the first and last time. Soon the polite rivalry turned into bitter enmity. Both men were forced to take a stand on the regimes in their respective countries - and chose radically different paths. Toscanini, "the dictator", bravely challenged Mussolini; Furtwängler, a conservative, meanwhile proclaimed that art is always apolitical and reluctantly made a pact with the Nazis. The documentary not only opens up the different musical universes of the two great conductors by retracing their careers in Milan, Bayreuth and New York, but also raises a question that is more topical than ever: what has art to do with politics? Accordionist, bandoneonist, composer, Richard Galliano, multifaceted musician, tireless worker always in search of new inspiration, tirelessly rewrites the history of the accordion. This is how he invents the concept of "New Musette", revealing to the musical world the unprecedented and daring image of a revived accordion, between waltzes musettes, jazz and tango, blues and Brazilian music. The meetings with Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Michel Portal and so many others confirm his musical eclecticism. But Richard Galliano does not stop there. Passionate about classical music from an early age, he happily explores and interprets the works of Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach; in constant search of harmony and musicality, he even broadens his repertoire to film music by adapting the work of Nino Rota. We have almost forgotten that its origins lie in the WDR's electronic studio, which made Cologne to one of the centres of the avant-garde during the post-war years. This is the story of how a room full of strange devices would become a cabinet of curiosities, the vibrations of which sent the whole world in a state of ecstasy. From the beginnings directly after the Second World War in Paris with Pierre Schaeffer's 'musique concrète', the film focuses on Stockhausen and goes on to Kraftwerk, from Jean-Michel Jarre and the IRCAM studio right up to Detroit to the beginnings of techno. Richard Strauss and his Heroines Divorce! After six years of marriage the choleric and chronically jealous Pauline, daughter of a general, has had enough of Richard Strauss. Pauline always knew it: her husband who at 36 is celebrated as the most important living German composer across the globe is cheating on her. His congeniality and moral uprightness is just a mask! Are his inspirations for the erotic escapades which are the basis of several of his tone poems and songs based on the love affairs of the artist? The film Richard Strauss and his Heroines goes on an exciting journey discovering the women in Strauss' life. At the focus is primarily his relationship with Pauline, to whom he was married for over 55 years up to his death. Until today she applies as a harridan who often embarrassed her husband in public. It hereby falls under the table that Strauss at the beginning and the end of his relationship composed his finest songs for the trained singer who gave up her career for him and covered his back for the rest of his life. What was it that made the broken old man, who experienced the most varied of epochs in German history, from the Empire to the Nazi dictatorship to the post-war period, write in 1948 in his final song ("At Sunset") one of the most moving declarations of love in the history of music: "We have through sorrow and joy gone hand in hand"? Richard Strauss and his Heroines - this is the first filmed search for clues about the unforgettable heroines created by Strauss. It is both the story of a turbulent, and at the end moving, love story of two people who were prepared to walk through fire for each other. We visit Strauss' last surviving grandchild in Garmisch and we meet the great Strauss singers Brigitte Fassbaender, Reneé Fleming, Dame Gwyneth Jones and Christa Ludwig, who report on their famous Strauss roles. Neither simply dance or traditional theatre, but an exciting and exhilarating new form that transcends either genre. Revisor is performed by 10 incredible dancers of Pite's company Kidd Pivot, to a soundtrack recorded by 9 voice actors. The dancers lip sync to the actors' words in Pite's trademark fluid, expressive and witty style. Revisor is based on a Russian anecdote about mistaken identity that surfaced in 1833, and quickly spread. It is now widely accepted as probably true. In 1836, the story took shape in a five-act play: The Government Inspector (Revisor) by Nikolai Gogol. The play premiered in St. Petersburg before the Czar who, according to reports, laughed and applauded, and is said to have remarked "Everybody gets it, and I most of all!" The play was in disguise as a comedy. Ten dancers embody the recorded dialogue of some of Canada's finest actors, exploring conflict, comedy and corruption in the potent relationship between language and the body. Revisor reunites the creators of the international stage hit Betroffenheit (winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production 2017) with director Jeff Tudor, who won the Rose d'Or (Arts) and Golden Prague Awards 2018 for his capture of Betroffenheit for the BBC. Richard Galliano, Anniversary Concert Richard Galliano (accordeon) Richard Galliano has enchanted stages all over the world for fifty years. Accordionist, bandoneonist, composer, Richard Galliano, multifaceted musician, tireless worker always in search of new inspiration, tirelessly rewrites the history of the accordion. This is how he invents the concept of "New Musette", revealing to the musical world the unprecedented and daring image of a revived accordion, between waltzes musettes, jazz and tango, blues and Brazilian music. The meetings with Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Michel Portal and so many others confirm his musical eclecticism. But Richard Galliano does not stop there. Passionate about classical music from an early age, he happily explores and interprets the works of Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach; in constant search of harmony and musicality, he even broadens his repertoire to film music by adapting the work of Nino Rota. He is also the only accordionist who records for the prestigious German record label Deutsche Grammophon. During this accordion recital, given on the occasion of this anniversary, he will perform works by Debussy, Satie, Chopin, Granados, Michel Legrand, Astor Piazzolla and of course, his own compositions. Electronic Vibrations - A sound changes the world Whether techno or hip-hop - electronic music is nowadays the driving force of pop culture. We have almost forgotten that its origins lie in the WDR's electronic studio, which made Cologne to one of the centres of the avant-garde during the post-war years. This is the story of how a room full of strange devices would become a cabinet of curiosities, the vibrations of which sent the whole world in a state of ecstasy. From the beginnings directly after the Second World War in Paris with Pierre Schaeffer's 'musique concrète', the film focuses on Stockhausen and goes on to Kraftwerk, from Jean-Michel Jarre and the IRCAM studio right up to Detroit to the beginnings of techno. The festival is famous for its eclectic programme, bringing together some of the biggest names in jazz, soul and hip-hop, including artists like Fred Wesley, Marc Ribot and many more.
